About Doc Burnstein’s Ice Cream Lab
Established in 2003, Doc Burnstein’s Ice Cream Lab is an old-fashioned ice cream parlor concept committed to serving premium quality products while having memorable experiences in a comfortable and nostalgic atmosphere.

Doc’s Fine Chocolates, delivers delicious confectionary experiences using only the finest traditional recipes and ingredients while integrating innovative flavors with certified fair trade chocolate. Handcrafted locally in small batches, Doc’s Fine Chocolates are created by our current Head Chocolatier, Cale Munro, under the expert mentorship of Gerald Reed, Master Candy Maker.
Doc’s demonstrates their commitment to community involvement by partnering with nonprofits, including much-needed blood drives, community education, wellness programs and tuition scholarships and assistance to our employees. Doc’s aims to generate both employees and fans who feel like they are a part of the family.
Doc’s original flagship location is located in the Village of Arroyo Grande. This parlor was the original home to Chuck Burn’s parlor “Bernardoz” from the 1970s until he retired in the early 2000s. Greg Steinberger stepped in and took over in the same original location and asked Burns to mentor him. Burns’ graciously shared his traditional recipes, experience and knowledge, hence the name “Burnstein’s” a combination of both Burns’ and Steinberger’s names.
Doc Burnstein’s Ice Cream Lab welcomes you to taste, try and share sweet memories with your family and loved ones.
Doc Burnstein’s Ice Cream is based in a “community building business model” meaning, we are a Benefit (B) Corporation, owned by our shareholders in our communities. Other elements of this model are giving back to the community, employee development, integrity based on the Golden Rule and profits-not just measured in monetary terms but also in the positive memories and experiences our customers and employees receive.
Doc Burnsteins’ Ice Cream Lab has parlor take-over Fundraisers available to community non-profit groups, schools and other qualifying causes where a percentage of the proceeds (during the hours of the event) get donated to the cause.
Doc’s donates our products and time to our community through our monthly blood drives, raffle and auction donations, events and catering and through civic groups.
As part of our commitment to our community we recognize the importance of being ecologically mindful. Our utensils, cups and napkins are all biodegradable. We offer separation bins for recycling in our parlors and offer glass dishware to combat waste and give the customers that old-fashioned sense of value and appreciation.
Doc’s Fine Chocolates is the latest addition to our menu, offering flavors echoing Doc Burnstein’s Ice Cream Lab’s most loved favorites such as “Doc’s Java,” “Raspberry Merlot” and “Motor Oil” in addition to many old-fashioned recipes such as English Toffee, Super Cream Caramel and Peanut Brittle. All of Doc’s Fine Chocolates are hand-dipped in dark, milk or a combination of the two chocolates. Doc’s Fine Chocolates uses chocolate certified by Fair Trade USA and Rainforest Alliance.
